Q&A with Ivan Tochev
Founder & CEO of General Laser GmbH, Austria
Tell me about your company!
We specialize in cm-accurate positioning with RTK GNNS receivers (GPS, Galileo, Glonass, Beidou) and with mobile LiDAR scanners (3D laser scanners), as well in autonomous robots for inspections and surveillance. We also develop and manufacture hardware and software. Our General Laser products are manufactured in Vienna, Austria.
Tell me about your top two products and describe them briefly!
GLRM
Our GLRM is a compact, but extremely capable and versatile RTK receiver. The GLRM is setting new world standards for ease of use, for surveying, GIS, mapping and navigation. It is our smallest device, but with the biggest impact on several industries.
GLidar
GLidar is our mobile LiDAR scanner with real time point cloud processing. It delivers instant results, similar to the static/terrestrial laser scanners, but it is mobile, you can walk around a building and scan it from all sides. Our GLidar also has an integrated RTK GNSS receiver, which enables the user to obtain geo-referenced 3D scans with no need for post-processing. The GLidar sets the most up to date standards for ease of use.
In what way/s is the GLRM an innovative product?
Like no other device, the GLRM can be used like a MagSafe add-on attached to your mobile phone, as well as classically on a pole. It also has an unexampled mini pole, which is closing the gap between the classical use on a pole and the handy use directly on the mobile device. The biggest European mobile network operators, such as Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile's parent firm), A1 and other prestigious European companies, are using our GLRM in combination with an iPhone Pro / iPad Pro for geo-referenced 3D scanning of their glass fiber cable networks.
How about the GLidar, your 3D scanner?
Today's mobile LiDAR scanners record raw data, which is later post-processed. This requires typically 10-fold the time you need for scanning, qualified personnel, powerful computers, and often expensive software for calculating odometry and data fusion. Our GLidar can process data on the fly. After you stop scanning, you could export the ready 3D model in a minute. And it also has a modular design: besides the use as a manual scanner, it can be easily integrated on a backpack frame or on a drone. Finally, it requires affordable Makita type batteries, available at most construction sites.
